Pork vs Beef: Which is better?

Happy new month guys. We are excited to announce a new series on our blog tagged “Versus”. In this series, we will compare different agricultural products, services, terms, equipment and anything fun in the agricultural world.

Today we are starting with an age-long debate: Pork vs Beef. We will be comparing their taste, consumption trend, and nutrient content. Pork and beef are two of the most common meat types in the world. They both account for 58% of the total global meat consumption. Pork is meat from a mature pig while beef comes from a mature cow.

CONSUMPTION

According to a FAO report in 2014, pork accounts for 36% of the total global meat intake compared to 22% for beef. A USDA report in 2015 backs this claim by reporting the consumption of pork is almost twice the amount of beef.

Despite being popular meat types, both meat types suffer from certain consumption restrictions. Islam and Judaism restrict pork consumption, Hinduism restricts beef consumption.

TASTE

One of the fiercest debates between these meat types is which taste is superior. However, no conclusion as to which taste is superior, as taste preferences vary from person to person and culture to culture.

NUTRIENT COMPOSITION

*Please note: the amount specified is per 100grams of the product

Source: USDA Food Composition Database.

Pork has a higher concentration of vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, D & E than beef, while beef contains a higher concentration of vitamins A, B12 & K than pork.

Pork contains more phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and less sodium than beef. Beef contains more iron, zinc & copper than pork.

The protein quality in pork is higher than that of beef because of the higher quantity of essential amino acids in pork.

Pork contains a lower amount of cholesterol compared to beef and a lesser concentration of saturated fats than beef. However, pork contains fewer overall fats than beef.

In comparison, pork has an advantage over beef as the better of the two meat types with slightly higher nutritional content. Pork is also cheaper to produce than beef which reflects on its price and availability.
